When is a natural insect repellent not an insect repellent?

In recent months many of you would have noticed that there seems to be a dwindling supply of natural insect repellents available on our website, this can be attributed to a crack-down on ‘natural insect repellents’ by the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority). As the name suggests, the APVMA is a government body established to centralise the registration of all agricultural and veterinary chemical products on the Australian market.

So what does the APVMA have to do with natural insect repellents?

According to the APVMA, an ‘agricultural chemical product’ includes any substance or organism used to destroy, stupefy, repel, inhibit the feeding of, or prevent pests on plants or other things (including us humans). This means for any manufacturer of a product that makes claim to any of these properties (natural or otherwise) is required to register their product with the APVMA before they can make statements like: ‘Contains natural botanical extracts to help repel biting insects’. Registration of a product with the APVMA is a lengthy and costly process, taking several years and potentially 100s of thousands of dollars.

The outcome of this crack-down by the APVMA has meant that many manufacturers of natural insect repellents have simply chosen to take their product off the market. However, there have been a handful of manufacturers that have taken the ‘mozzie by the proboscis’ (so to speak) and have simply chosen to re-label their products to avoid making any claims to ‘repel insects’. Although from media advertising, it seems imperative that Australians become more sun-conscious, often the effects of chemicals in conventional sunscreens can pose additional threats to our health and well-being. BPA - have your say

As most of you know - the media has recently drawn attention to the dangers of Bisphenol A (BPA) in bottles. This attention created immediate hysteria - we literally have 100's of concerned mothers ringing us - frightened that they may have caused irreperable damage to their babies by feeding them with bottles that contain BPA and also angry that no one, including doctors, pharmacists and midwives have ever informed them about the dangers of this chemical.

Sadly, once the media hype dies down and the issue no longer has attention, a whole new generation of new mothers are again oblivious to this terrible situation, where in Australia, there are hundreds of bottle on our shelves, poisioning our babies.

Breastfeeding And Bottle Feeding - my experience

We have recently had some very negative feedback about the information provided on this page of our site - www.downtoearthorganics.com.au- some of which has been rather abusive to say the least! Despite the tone in which it is delivered, we welcome feedback and take on board everything that is expressed to us. There were some comments made on the site which were based on personal experience and opinions (aren't we all entitled to this?) - that may have appeared to be pro formula and anti breastfeeding - which of course is not our intention. We do apologise that these comments have offended some people and as a result they have been removed.

I wish to make it clear that we are neither pro breastfeeding or pro formula feeding. We are merely trying to provide information (including personal experiences) and chemical free products for those mothers who can not, or choose not to breastfeed.

Like most things in life, the choice to breastfeed is a personal one, but sadly not a choice that all mothers are presented with. I solely breastfed my beautiful angel from the second she was born, however after a couple of weeks I visited my lactation nurse and was horrified to find that she had lost a considerable about of weight. Honestly, it was one of the worst days of my life - I felt I was a failure as a mother. I was reduced to tears, my poor baby - she must be so hungry - how could I let this happen! I fed her as often as I humanly could, but unfortunately I was unable to produce enough milk to satisfy her - particularly as she was a very large bubba (10 pounds 7 at birth). I ate well, took vitamins and herbs such as blessed thistle and fenugreek to help my flow, but unfortunately I still did not produce enough. It was suggested to me that I could take a particular drug to assist with my milk flow, but I have a strong anti drug policy (particularly when breastfeeding!) so this was not an option for me.

My lactation nurse recommend that I supplement feed her with formula, and within a week she had gained weight, started sleeping well, and I started to regain my sanity. I continued to feed her with both bottle and breast until she was ready to be weaned, and whilst I adored breastfeeding her - she was never as satisfied after a breastfeed as she was after a bottle feed. This would not be the case for everyone of course - but it was certainly the case for me. Of course, I suffered a great degree of guilt and a sense of failure that I could not solely breastfeed her - but as I watched her thrive and develop in to a beautiful healthy child, I knew that all that mattered was she was happy and healthy - regardless of where she was getting her milk from.

She is now 2 and a half and she has never been sick - despite being unimmunised - and is the most beautiful, healthy. happy child in the world (well, we think so anyway). From 12 weeks old, she has slept 12 hours straight every night, and 2 hours every day, she has no allergies, is tall and strong, and is as bright as a spark. Now - there is no doubt that my child enjoys the blessing of optimum health due to her being breastfed - however I have to say that I believe formula also provided her with wonderful nutrients, and prevented her from being hungry. I receivied a comment from on lady who claimed that formula fed babies are "deprived". Of course I find this comment highly offensive - as would all mothers who formula feed. My child has never, and will never be "deprived" of anything - especially nutrients! So, I have to say that formula feeding my precious angel with formula was in no way detrimental to her health. But again - this is simply my experience.

Unfortunately, when I was struggling with breastfeeding and trying to find the most natural way of bottle feeding my child - there were very few sites that sold organic formula and it was almost impossible to find baby bottles that did not contain Bisphenol A in them. This, was one of the main reasons we had for starting this business. I want to be able to provide those mothers who can't, or choose not to breastfeed - with chemcial free alternatives - and help alleviate the guilt they may suffer as a result of not breastfeeding.

I have many friends and customers who have had differing experiences with breastfeeding. Some have breastfed up until their children are 2, some until 6 months, some, like me have breast and bottle fed, and some have chosen not to breastfeed at all. Whilst I may not agree with some of their decisions, I still embrace them and understand that this is a very sensitive subject for some mothers - therefore I would never dream of criticising them for the choices they have made. Acceptance brings peace. And lets be honest - the last thing we need in those first few months of parenthood is criticism. So, next time you see a baby being fed from the breast, or from the bottles, smile, and be happy that that child has someone to love and care for it and that it is being nourished.

Oh! And in response to those comments that we are providing this information about formula because we are "money hungry monsters" and "greedy", allow me to make some facts clear. We sell over 1500 natural and organic products on our site, 3 of these products are organic baby formula. As a small retailer, the profit that we make on this formula (like most organic products) is miniscule - roughly $5 per box. The sale of formula on our site represents a very small part of our total sales. The money that we make on selling formula per year would barely be enough to take ourselves off to the movies. Carbon Sequestration

Carbon Sequestration is the concept, and now a reality, of storing CO2 to stop it being released into our atmosphere, thereby slowing global warming.

Whereas trees and plant life absorb CO2 gasses, carbon sequestration essentially means the premeditated creation of ways of storage that do not naturally occur. These mass storage areas are called carbon sinks and may include things like underground geological formations, oceans, minerals, vegetation and soils.

Storing CO2 underground?

This is simply known as geological sequestration meaning that CO2 is basically pumped underground to be, over time, absorbed by the surrounding environment - that is rocks. Advocates of this method of carbon sequestration claim that the gasses will be safely stored forever in this manner, while critics of carbon sequestration that potential CO2 leaks and the energy to force the gasses underground are not worth the risk.

Toy Safety In The Home

Every year in Australia, and all around the world, toys are involved in thousands of accidents so it is vital to take care when buying extra toys and when leaving toys lying all around the home.

Because of the stringent regulations imposed on toy manufacturers, the safety of toys themselves isn't the major problem. Instead, the majority of accidents occur when toys are left lying around the home and when young children have access to toys intended for older children.

When purchasing a toy as a parent should always make sure that the baby or toddler carries a CE or Lion Mark, both of which suggest toy excellence and its obedience to toy safety regulations. It is important to be aware that if a toy does not have one of these special mark stamps, it may well be designed as a novelty toy and possibly will not be safe for children. Furthermore, as parents or children you should at all times check the age range viewable on the toy's packaging and only ever allow children access to a toy once they are above the minimum age range specified.

Safety tips around the home:

* Check toys methodically for tiny, removable pieces before giving to your children (especially those under 3)

* By no means give babies under the age of 3 balloons, small balls or marbles or anything else they could put into their mouths

* Ensure you keep all magnets and toys with magnetic parts away from children under 6 years of age

* Do not allow children to play with toys made of fluffy fabric or 'hair' that can easily be sucked, chewed or pulled out

* If possible try to avoid giving children under 6 toys with long ribbons or ropes attached

* Make sure children use the correct safety equipment when on a bike, skateboard or roller skates

* Regularly test the state of your children's toys and get rid of any showing signs of wear and tear

* Make sure older children tidy their toys away following use as falling over toys is one of the most frequent household accidents

* Persuade your children to play with just one toy at a time so they are easier to control

How To Have A Baby On A Budget

Any of us cannot turn around presently without all the forms of the media screaming about the global financial crisis and how hard things are for all of us. But without doubt, a slow news arrives, and the media begin tallying up exactly how many hundreds of thousands of dollars it’s going to cost us to raise our children.. However how much does it really cost to have a baby?

The answer is completely in your hands. You can buy a new Bugaboo, or a pram on Ebay for a 1/10 of the cost. You can buy the latest baby seat and capsule, or you can buy second hand one from your best friend.

Having a baby costs as much as you want it to. If you want a new nursery in your home think about ways to lower the costs involved - beg and borrow.

As with a lot things in life, there is a big difference relating to desires and requirements. Babies are truly very straightforward creatures and require little more than love, somewhere warm to live, food, someone to change them and a lot of love - that is the easy part.

As a result if you’re planning a baby, or perhaps a new one, plus your budget could do with a little bit of help, below some guidelines that may help ease the financial pressure of a baby.

Borrow, Beg but don't steal

You might have friends that may have a baby that has outgrown the cot or bassinette it has been using, make use of it for the few months that your baby will need it. Do any of your relations have a spare cot? Possibly even the cot you slept in while a baby? Always check that baby equipment is secure and complies with the Australian Standards, but using second-hand items makes excellent monetary and environmental sense - that is it will lower your carbon imprint. Swap parties & toy libraries

Ask your buddies who have had babies what baby things, products or items they suggest and what they rarely used. Swap parties are a really great idea. If friends have babies that are slightly older or younger than yours, arrange to swap clothes with each other. Go ‘shopping’ at a girlfriend’s house for your baby’s new sized wardrobe and return the favour. Swap or lend maternity clothes once you do not want them anymore. When your baby is older, keep toys clean and stimulating by trading with all your friends once a month, or try a toy library which are increasing in recognition and are a brilliant idea.

Breastfeed!

Breastfeeding is the cheapest means to feed your baby. The health benefits are well-known, however from a monetary view point, making your baby’s milk yourself is the ultimate as it’s totally free.

Modern cloth nappies (MCNs) and wipes

Reusable nappies save money and the environment. Modern cloth nappies are a world away from old fashioned terry-towling squares that countless parents were subjected to when they were babies, made from renewable fabrics like bamboo. Now in marvellous colours and designs, they are more like disposables in fit and purpose.

Making use of cloth nappies and baby wipes for subsequent babies make it even cheaper. And hey, what’s one more load of washing every two or three days compared to buying a pack of disposable nappies every week? Spoon them into an ice-cube tray, pop on the lid, and you have a week’s worth of baby food in your freezer!

If you have any leftovers left after you have served dinner for the family, spoon into a little container and freeze. Your baby can eat a array of family meals without any additional effort or cost on your behalf.

Get Dad to make some toys

Make your own toys. Little babies like to grab an orange bag filled with loud paper. Crush up some newspaper and let them play with it. Pack a little Tupperware container with rice and tape shut to make a shaker. Fill a soft drink bottle with water and bits of coloured sponge and food colouring and watch them roll it around the floor for hours.

Make use of park - swing the days away.

Go to your local park, play on the swings, dabble at the beach, read a few books, have a picnic in your backyard. They are all free!

How To Motivate Dad To Help Baby Feeding

Baby Safety, From The Sun

You need to take immense care to protect your baby's skin from the sun. Sunlight is full of ultraviolet light that can set off short and long term damage to your baby. Not only will sunburn cause your baby great discomfort and pain, a solitary session of severe sunburn during childhood can add to the growth of skin cancer in later life.

Like adults, babies with lighter skin possess an even bigger risk of sun skin damage if exposed to sunlight, even on a cloudy day or in the shade.

Petrol Saving Tips - saving for wallet and environment

I have been meaning to write a blog on this for quite some time. Since my first thoughts on this issue, however, the price of oil and then petrol has come down considerably, mainly due to softening demand as a consequence of the global economic crisis (or the GFC as I am now starting to hear) - or so I understand. I actually filled my car last night, that being a Sunday and know to be one of the more expensive days, and it totaled more than $20 less that just a few weeks ago - incredible saving. Who says the GFC is all that bad.

With the Christmas holidays drawing nearer, thankfully, I have devised a useful list of 8 petrol saving tips to capitalise on that petrol saving even further.

Cruise control - a constant speed over a long trip will save you heaps at the bowser, let alone saving you heaps on speeding fines
Air-conditioning - if you are cruising around town at less than 50 km/h don't use it - this will save 10% on your fuel bill or $6 on a 55L tank. At speeds greater than this the opposite will occur due to aerodynamics and drag
Get a check-up - servicing & tyre pressures are essential to efficient driving
Choose your fuel wisely - do the maths and use premium with a 98 octane. Not only will your car run better, it is a better quality fuel and will look after your engine and you will get 40 km extra out of the average tank of fuel (based on 50L tank)
What gear are you in? - the lower the revs the less you will use. Heavy accelerating could use 30% more fuel. Use higher gears as often as you can, remembering though that if your car is labouring in a high gear that it actually may be using more fuel
Is the pram in the boot? - get it out and anything else that may be weighing you down. Think about this - if you have 50kg's of weight in the car that does not need to be there and you car weighs 1500kg's, that represents 30% of the body weight of the car
Check you speed - driving at 90 km/h instead of 110 km/h can save you 25% on your fuel costs
Switching off and warming up - if you are sitting idle for more than 20 seconds turn your car off and if you car is fuel injected you don't need to warm it up

When we fist started using the Biobaby organic cotton nappy we had a number of leaky moments. However, with some consultation with Biobaby, this was solved by soaking it in water and hand washing a number of times - the more we do the better it seams to get.

A New Direction

In the next couple of days our product focus is taking on exciting change. We have decided to shift away from organic food, though not altogether, and move into non-toxic and environmentally responsible wooden toys for babies and toddlers - see picture.

Although we have stocked Anamalz for quite some time, the demand for non-toxic wooden baby and toddler toys has been insatiable. Due to this we have finally tracked down baby toys safe and educational enough for us promote. The producers also manufacture under fair trade schemes and are have an eco-conscience.

Are Plastic Bags Really A Menace?

So much hype surrounds the little plastic bag. In fact, I heard through my reputable industry sources that a major supermarket chain in Australia just bought 1 billion green reusable bags. Now, lets have a think about this...let's say they bought the bags for between 5-10 cents each, that would be a significant outlay would it not. However, selling then for between $1 and $1.50, that billion dollars is looking more like a profit of more than 12 million, once all the bags have been sold - nice money if you can get it huh. So I now go back to the title of this blog - Are Plastic Bags Really A Menace? I guess it really depends who you talk to about it. The major supermarket chain who spent the billion dollars on reusable green bags sure thinks plastic bags are bad. Not only will they make and estimated 12 million dollars profit on green reusable bags but we will be all using way less plastic bags which then adds a huge amount of money to their bottom line too.

I really had not given much thought to it until recently reading that plastic bags only represent two percent of total waste - YES 2%!

I smell a very intelligent marketing campaign.

Why Wait To Ban Bisphenol A

I was reading an American article today on various senators calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ban bisphenol A in plastics. Bisphenol A is a chemical used to make clear, hard plastic for products including baby bottles, the lining of cans and water bottles.

The chemical has been linked to a host of medical problems in laboratory animals, including prostate and breast cancer, and neurological disorders.

It seems the U.S, once again, is way ahead of us when it comes to these things. Why are they though? When is comes to the health of our babies we should be leading the way.

Canada, who are even more proactive that the U.S, announced April 18 that it will classify bisphenol A as a toxin and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, will ban the use of the chemical - they did in June. That same week a number of companies, including Wal-Mart and Toys R Us, announced they would be phasing out the use of bisphenol A in their children's products. Nalgene, a manufacturer of sports water bottles, announced that it, too, would discontinue the use of bisphenol A.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't remember any of our politicians chatting about such important issues. Is the health of our children less important than the impending recession?

Babycare and Carbon Footprint

It can be a very touchy subject, but having babies has a huge impact on our environment, especially in Western cultures, where our carbon footprints are already massive. When you have a baby make sure you bring them up with a "tread lightly" philosophy.

Breast is the BEST - if possible breastfeed, not only is it extremely good for your baby but it's extremely good for the environment. In particular, you will save tonnes of CO2 going into the environment as you will not need packaged products like baby bottles, formula & other baby food items

Baby Formula and Fluoride

What are your feelings on adding fluoride to baby formula?

The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) found that babies fed on formula topped up with fluoridated water exceeded the recommended daily intake of of fluoride.

Australia has a very high rate of breastfed babies, despite this though, a large number still consume baby formula st least thee times a day. A 1993 study into fluoride in baby formula found that two Australian brands had higher than average amounts of fluoride in them.

As the cases of allergies and sensitivities rise in babies more and more mothers are turning to alternative baby formula such as soy and goat's milk formula.

Some possible side affects of high than average doses of formula include:

Dental Fluorosis - brown, mottled stains on teeth caused by too much fluoride during formation of teeth. Read more in this issue
IQ - children with higher than average levels of fluoride in their systems for long period may end up with a lower IQ's (found by a Chinese study in 2000 by the Tianjin Medical University)

If breastfeeding is not an option, a low-fluoride baby formula, reconstituted with non-chlorinated water is the next best option. The NHMRC recommends that parents use rainwater or bottled water for children up to 6 years of age to limit or prevent dental fluorosis.

When children are old enough to use toothpaste, select a low or non-fluoridated paste and ensure they do not swallow any paste.

Feeding babies and children a healthy diet rich in grains, fruits, and organic vegetables, plus regular brushing, will ensure excellent dental health for life.

KK's Choice Botobolar Organic Shiraz 2005

This fine drop is made by passionate organic grape-growers Kevin & Tina Karstom. Their gorgeous vineyard has been organic and certified since the early 70's and produces some exciting and fresh wines including the 2005 KK's Choice Botobolar Shiraz.

Located 10 minutes north-east of Mudgee, Gil Wahlquist established Botobolar in 1971 using organic practices and it is Australia's oldest organic vineyard. It was taken over by Kevin Karstom in 1994 who has continued and further enhanced the organic credentials & reputation of the label with his wife Trina. The vineyard produces some of the best grapes in the region and any excess are snapped up by some of the major wine companies. The 2003 vintage was still in the midst of the drought, so the yields were low, but the quality was high.

Barriers To Organic Purchase

There are a couple of main reasons that people give for not buying organic food, they are price and availability.

Organic food, in a lot of cases, does come at a premium price and this is the main reason for people not to purchase. Organic food is often perceived as expensive and consequently it should be up to the organic industry to communicate the reasons for these prices. For example, most people is Australia value certain foods over others with the average household spending just $16 per week of fresh fruit and vegetables, but $43 on junk and fast food (ABS 2006). So, it should not be a case for affordability, but rather a case for education and priorities.

Cooking Techniques

General cooking makes up around 6% of the total energy used in an average home, you can reduce this significantly with just a few cooking tips!

Always use the smallest pot/pan possible, as this uses less energy to heat
Always use a lid, and the one that fits best too
Cook in batches - if you are cooking a meal from the beginning ensure you cook enough for several meals, freezing the balance will use much less power than cooking a new meal
Use flat bottomed pans, they are most efficient
Use a toaster as they use 3 x less energy than a regular oven grill

It's easy being green.

Certified Organic Produce Loopholes

I just had a chef come into the store and buy some organic produce from me. He decided to share with me a he had learnt from a 2 year organic farming course he had studied recently.

As the story goes, a certified organic banana farmer in Coffs Harbour owned a 1 hectare property and had a brother, that also owned a farm but had 10+ hectares - non certified.

The brother with the non-certified farm decided he would brand his bananas as certified organic, by basically funneling then through his other brothers certification.

The short of it was that they were picked up by the relevant governing bodies and fined $75,000 for their efforts. The fine, however, pales in comparison to the estimated $500,000 the farmer made from the crop going into the community as certified organic.

Apparently, his words upon getting caught were "where do I sign...". Slippery huh.

It really takes no genius to work out that for small sum of 75k and no criminal record the banana farmer in Coffs Harbour, who is not certified, would be likely to commit the same offence in the next harvest.

When are the certified governing bodies going to get serious?

What Happens When You Drink Cola

I really wanted to share this information with you all as I think most of us have tried cola at some point in time - quite scary.

10 minutes: 10+ teaspoons go into your system which is all you should have in a whole 24hr period. The phosphoric acid in the cola stops you tasting all that sugar.

20 minutes: Blood sugar goes wild, and your liver tries to maximise insulin production in so that it can turn the sugar into fat.

40 minutes: As the caffeine travels through you, your pupils dilate, blood pressure rises, and your liver tries to pump more sugar into your system.

45 minutes: Dopamine levels go up, tricking body into feeling good, hence why it's so addictive.

Baby BeeHinds Nappy

Baby BeeHinds cloth nappies are luxurious, soft on babies skin, are durable and have an innovative breathable nappy cover. Baby BeeHinds PUL Wrap will give your baby fantastic coverage with a snug fit. The covers are really stretchy and are made from Polyurethane Laminate that is between a couple of layers of polyester fabric for a groovy and soft feel.

The PUL design is really great as it allows the nappy to breathe, thus moisture from the nappy can evaporate keeping bubba dry and cool in summer.

Baby BeeHinds cloth nappy can be washed in any machine and can even be dried in a dryer, but I would prefer to advise using the clothes line - think GREEN.

I recommend rotating between 2 covers during the day, letting one air whilst the other is in use, and then swapping them at the next change. This will ensure your covers stay at their best! For newborns I recommend between 4 and 6 small covers, then as baby grows you can move onto 3-4 medium covers and 3-4 large covers.

Reduce Carbon Footprint By Growing Your Own

In addition to buying local, eating seasonal organic produce, you can also try growing your own produce to reduce your carbon imprint.

If you have enough room plant some fruit trees. Not only will you have, after some time, a huge amount of fresh organic fruit, but you will be taking CO2 out of the air as it;s absorbed by the trees.

Some other tips to lower your carbon imprint include:

Do not use plant boxes or pots
Use local flowers or seeds

Plastics To Watch Out For

Number 3 Plastics

V (Vinyl) or PVC
Found in: Cooking oil bottles, clear food packaging

Why? Number 3 plastics may release toxic breakdown products (including pthalates) into food and drinks.

The risk is the greatest when containers start breaking down, are put through the dishwasher or when they are heated in the oven or microwave. PVC can release highly toxic dioxins into the environment, and the materials can off-gas toxic plasticisers into your home.

Number 6 Plastics
PS (polystyrene)
Found in: Disposable plates and cups, meat trays, egg cartons, carry-out containers

Number 6 plastics (polystyrene) are made into soft Styrofoam-style cups as well as rigid foams and hard plastic products, so remember to look for those little numbers in the arrows (don't feel bad if you need a magnifying glass). Avoid using them as much as possible.

Why? Number 6 plastics can release potentially toxic breakdown products (including styrene). Get this: particularly when heated! That insulated coffee cup -- the one that 'knows' when to keep your drink warm -- doesn't seem so smart anymore does it?

Plastic Number 7
Miscellaneous
Found in: Baby bottles, three- and five-gallon water bottles, certain food containers

A wide range of plastic resins that don't fit into the other six categories are lumped into number 7. Some are quite safe, but the ones to worry about are the hard polycarbonate varieties, as found in various drinking containers (like Nalgene bottles) and rigid plastic baby bottles.

Why? Studies have shown polycarbonate can leach bisphenol A, a potential hormone disruptor, into liquids. According to Trasande, no level of bisphenol A exposure is known to be truly safe, and in August a government panel expressed 'some concern' that the ingredient causes neural and behavioral problems in children.

Why not play it safe and swap out those hard plastic baby and water bottles for Number 1, 5 or corn-based plastics, or even shatter-resistant glass?

I recently purchased the documentary Food Matters and watched it for the first time last night. To be honest, I was spellbound from the beginning to the end and astonished in parts.

Food Matters, the movie, takes an interesting look into the natural world of treating your body with vitamin c and good, whole, organic food instead of medicine - except in severe cases.

Food Matters also looks at the pharmaceutical companies and their role in keeping us sick.

My favourite quote in the film is "1/4 of the food we eat is to keep us alive, 3/4 is to keep our doctor alive...".

Organic Industry Growth

It's now a reality, the Australian organic food and product industry is going off. A research report, financed by the Biological Farmers Of Australia (BFA), and coordinated by the University Of New England found that the organic food and drink industry has grown more than 25% in the last 4 years and retail sales are in excess on 500 million.

Another very interesting fact I plucked from the report is that Australia has 12,000,000 hectares of land dedicated to certified organic farming, which is the most in the world, and that the amount of organic farmers increased by 6% per year for the last 5 years.

Talc raises risk of ovarian cancer

It is really of no surprise, but women are now being warned to stop using talc, especially around the genital area. A recent study has found that using talk in this area can raise the risk of ovarian cancer by up to 40%.

According to the studies talcum powder can move up to the ovaries and cause inflammation that lets cancer cells breed. Harvard Medical School studied more than 3000 women and found using talc once a week raised the risk of ovarian cancer by 36%, rising to 41% for those who use it every day

Ovarian cancer, otherwise known as the silent cancer, kills more than 800 Australian women per year so it makes sense when when the CEO of the Cancer Council of Australia says that women should avoid using talcum powder on their genitals. He went on to say "It doesn't make the case definitively, but given we have no way of screening for ovarian cancer and it's difficult to pick up the symptoms, this is something women can do to reduce their risk...".

This is a scary thought, very scary, and especially as talcum powder is so often used on babies. There are alternatives now days though for mums and babies in the way of certified organic corn starch powder which is safe and gentle on your skin.

Corn starch powder is free from talc, sulphates, petrochemicals, artificial colours and fragrances, mineral oils and animal.

Cloth vs Disposable Nappies

Walk through the door of your home for the first time after giving birth and getting home from the hospital and you will know doubt have an idea as to what direction you are taking with regards to nappies. If you are have indeed decided hopefully this blog will give you a better idea of what is to come, if you are yet to decide brace yourself for some hard nappy facts - given that you are likely to use 5000+ per child. What baby bonus?

The Process Of Making a Nappy

Most disposable nappies are made from plastics, paper, and array of chemicals, dyes and fragrances.

Roughly 40% of a nappy is made up of wood pulp. The outer layer is made up of polymers made from precious fossil fuels, which made up 23% of the weight, and there is a absorbent core made from a chemical called sodium polyacrylate (SAP). Most nappies are then washed in either hydrogen peroxide or chlorine - scary.

New age cloth nappies are made from hemp, bamboo, fleece, polyester or organic cotton. Cotton is a water hungry crop that requires considerable amounts of fertiliser, unless it's organic, herbicides and pesticides to grow.

How Many Nappies Will I Use

It's estimated that most babies will go through 5000+ nappies from birth to potty training, while users of organic cotton nappies may only go through 20 nappies.

The 20 organic cotton nappies though have to be washed, painful as it may seem - not to forget soaking time and scraping number 2 into the loo. Over the nappy wearing life cycle that means around 44 extra loads of washing, 24 KWH of electricity, and 3000L of extra water.

Landfill

Over the 2.5 years your baby is likely to wear nappies the equivalent of 1/4 of the of the average car is likely to be produced in waste, ultimately going to landfill. Most disposable nappies will never decompose, especially while surrounded by other rubbish. Disposable nappies represent 4% of the total rubbish in landfill.

The Nappy Cost

Simple:

Disposables up to $6000
Fitted around $1000

The Result

There is no definitive answer to that yet, so the jury is still out. However, is seems clear to me that although fitted nappies do use considerable more water in the end it's felt that the benefits to the environment and your baby far outweigh the benefits of disposable nappies. Furthermore, no one study has ever looked at this issue and further considered the long-term health impacts of chlorine & petrochemicals on your babies skin - perhaps the time has come.

My advice of course is to do what suits your family best. We opted for a combination of fitted nappies with chlorine & petrochemical free nappies.

I came across this little short film/cartoon recently called the Meatrix (if you have seen the Matrix you will notice some of the characters but in animal form like Moopheus played by a cow). The short film is about the realities of animal cruelty and how, as consumers, we are aiding that cruelty, even if we don't know it.

Be warned that in parts the film can be a little confronting, especially part 2.

Krinkelwood Semillon

Krinkelwood is a certified in-conversion (essentially on it's way to becoming certified organic) biodynamic in the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley. Biodynamics considers the farm in its entirety as a living system, the soil is seen as an organism in its own right. Therefore the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides is prohibited. Instead Krinklewood uses a series of special preparations to enhance the life of the soil, which are applied at appropriate times in keeping with the rhythms of nature.

Biodynamic viticulture is the most natural agricultural ‘farming’ philosophy. The effect on the wine that you are drinking is that it is the most pure replication of the individuality of the vineyard.

Seeing that Krinkelwood is in-conversion it is not allowed to be recognised for any medals. However, don't think that this means the wine is not a pure and pristine Hunter Valley superstar.

CHARACTERISTICS

A pale green wine with a fragrant floral bouquet of citrus & pineapple entwined with a hint of passionfruit. The palate is crisp and lively with a long clean citrus finish enhanced by the balanced acids and intensity of fruit characteristics.

What is Bisphenol A ?

Bisphenol A is a common chemical used in the manufacturing process of polycarbonate plastic. It is now being linked to a vast range of health related issues which include cancer, heart disease immune problems and of course estrogen and puberty problems.

Who can Bisphenol A come into contact with?

In short, pretty much everyone. It's estimated that 95% of Australians have detectable levels of Bisphenol A in their bodies. The study also found that Bisphenol A affected animals with substantially lower levels in them.

Can Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) Cause Cancer?

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) are basically chemicals that help your soap, toothpaste & shampoo lather up.

There is no one definitive study to prove whether or not either SLS or SLES are cancer causing. However, it is well known that both are irritants and especially to those who have sensitive skin, babies or people with eczema or psoriasis - it actually strips the skin of it's natural oils.

Confused even further? Given that SLS is used in engine degreasing sprays and in many other harsh ways surely use over some time would have an impact on your health, your skin, or even our precious waterways.

Is the Organic Industry Overrated?

I was sitting outside my shop today feeding my baby some organic baby food, Ella's Kitchen actually, when a lady with a baby in pram and her husband walked past. I only caught a small part of the conversation but the lady ended by saying "it's overrated...".

At first I was a little hurt, but once I got that monkey off my back I pondered what she had said and it in a small way reminded me of a visit I made to a friends recently who had a 10 month old baby. Who, by the way, both lives 2 minutes walk from one of the best organic supermarkets in Syndney (About Life) and who I have heard once say "oh, I would never use natural or organic products...".

Upon arrival I was struck at the welts of eczema all over the face of my friends baby and how she was scratching them endlessly, but it wasn't until she had her nappy changed that the whole scenario unfolded, so to speak.

Once the Huggies nappy was taken off the true extent of the babies condition became evident, notwithstanding the obvious pain. She was simply covered in nappy rash.

After a quick dip in a Johnsons and Johnsons filled bath, the mum covered the baby in a steroid cream, splashed a little talc, then donned bubba in another Huggies nappy - I'm seriously not exaggerating.

Are these two mothers any different?

You see I didn't have to know much about the mother that walked past the shop today but there is a possibility that if her baby ever gets eczema, has allergies or pretty much any other health problem she is likely pay a visit. I have seen it all before at least 100 times.

So I ask the question again...is the organic industry overrated?
